How Not To Look Like The Queen Mother On your Son/Daughters Wedding Day!

I’ve had great fun putting this latest post together. What I would wear as mother of the bride for a wedding. I have three children and eight grandchildren and not one of my children are married yet!

When I was approached by House Of Fraser to choose a mother of the bride outfit for a wedding it brought about a few debates!

don't look like the queen mother on my wedding day!

It’s really quite important isn’t it when an occasion like this arrises.  It really got me thinking about what sort of outfit I would like to wear for this special wedding day. A few points came to mind

  • Comfortable – It’s going to be a long day!
  • Not too hot or cold to wear (you can never be sure of our UK weather!)
  • It’s got to look special
  • It needs to shift from day to night in a jiffy

I had some long conversations with my daughter Sara about what I would wear to her wedding day. Styles, colours etc for when it finally happens and the first thing she said was

“Please don’t get a suit and look like the queen’s mother”

All matching hat, shoes, and handbag”

Sara knows how I like to be a classic girl and can be way over monochromatic at times! Am I that predictable?

I would like to think that she could look at me on her special day and be proud, just like I know I will be of her. Even if she wore a bin bag!

House Of Fraser has so much to offer throughout the whole store, as well as the wedding Boutique where the store has put ideas into action to help you choose the way. Plus if you’re really stumped there’s always a personal shopper to fall back on.

I decided I wanted something feminine, floaty and fun for the big day.

The Dress

I chose this gorgeous floaty dress, by Coast, the “Maria Jacquard Dress” I fell in love with the colour and the golden thread running through it. The high and low hem is what added the fun part for me and I’m glad I played with pattern over plain.

The Jacket

The little Blush Pink “Sybil Jacket” from Phase Eight sits nicely on the waistline of the dress giving a more elegant effect to the outfit. Pinks, Browns and golden colours all matching nicely together, with lots of added contrast.

The shoes

The “Kankan Jewel Courts” from Carvella added the glamour I was after and thought these would work perfectly into the evening of a wedding. It was love at first sight as soon as I clapped eyes on them. They are not too high and very comfortable too.

I love the floaty hem at the back of the dress.

I didn’t add much jewellery to the outfit, I think it speaks for itself. A nice wedding corsage is all that’s needed.

I’m not a lover of showing my arms off! Hense the little jacket idea as a perfect cover-up. But you can’t celebrate and dance the night away in a jacket, can you?

I sent Sara some photos of the chosen outfit and she really liked it. I like that it’s elegant yet playful, not at all like the queen mother! plus I can wear all these items separately again.

Do you have a special wedding this year?

Do take a look at what the House Of Fraser Wedding Boutique has to offer. Everything is available for wedding guest outfits, bridesmaids, mother of the bride and of course the groom! I think the outfit I’ve chosen has turned out really well and it’s helpful to look at all the items suitable for a wedding on one page right down to the accessories.

I would like to thank  House of Fraser for inviting me to play at being Mother Of The Bride. I hope it will be for real soon!

Xo Laurie

You look amazing, this is a beautiful outfit.
2 of my close friends have children getting married this year and we have a whats app group where they share outfits as they try them on so we can all give our opinions! It’s so much fun even if it’s not for me, I’ll share this in the group, I’m sure they’d love to see a new idea ^_^

You would certainly upstage the bride Laurie, you look stunning! I love the layered, floaty design of the dress, and those shoes are gorgeous! It’s always tricky planning a wedding outfit in the UK because of the unpredictable weather but you chose so well. I buy most of my occasion wear from House Fraser, I’m a big fan of Issa, Biba, Coast and Phase Eight. I helped my mother in law choose a wedding outfit from the website recently.

How did I miss this post last week. Stunning dress. I wore a similar style last year to a special event. The high low with a muted pattern is spectacular.

Thanks, Linda. I really like how the dress floats at the back and it wasn’t too long at the front for little me! xx

This dress is devine and you look perfectly fit to be royality. Honestly it’s absolutely stunning. I dislike how often the mother of the bride outfits look either drab or like a curtain. This is neither. Classy. Trendy. Age appropriate. Feminine.

Love the dress and also love the sentiment that MoB’s don’t need to look like MoB’s – there is a distinct ‘uniform’ peddled by some of the big stores too. Thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo

that outfit is stunning, we have 3 wedding this year starting with the eldest son getting married in June. i have 2 outfits put together but i’m really happy with either of them, think I might have to check out our local John Lewis here in Dubai. The other 2 weddings are best mates in July and our niece in October, then next year child 4 is getting married, I may have to come and ask you for a bit of advice for that one #pocolo

That outfit is absolutely stunning Laurie! It looks so contemporary and modern. And great to have the little jacket. I have two weddings this year, my niece who is having a traditional wedding (I’ve earmarked a Joseph Ribkoff dress) and my stepdaughter. She’s a rock n roll bride who doesn’t want any fascinators, so I’ll be looking for a suitable low key sort of dress.

Oh I love the Ribkoff brand too Gail. They have a lovely collection this year that would be wedding-worthy xx

  19. April 22, 2018 / 10:33 am

Flippin heck Laurie, you look fantastic. It is not monochromatic, yet it is still you. Classic but not “mother of the bride” in the bad way. My husband has prevented me buying a skirt suit twice by pointing out I looked like the mother of the bride haha. He did not mean that as a compliment. You however, look like a total knock-out.

Oh wow, Laurie! Love the print, the floatiness and statement tiers of the dress. I can imagine you throwing off the jacket, Travolta-like, and dancing your little feet off. Those shoes too are so elegant. No fretting about what to wear now, hope you get a wedding soon! Hugs, x.

I have such an occasion in July and still I have not found the right dress. Like you I would want something I will wear again. And I do not want your typical mother of the bride look.. Will take a look in House of Fraser in Dublin..

  31. April 20, 2018 / 8:07 am

Absolutely stunning Laurie, just the right note. When my daughter was married I tried far too hard – spent a fortune and really it didn’t feel like me – wish I’d taken photos in advance! When my son was married I was presumably going out for lunch and arrived in a tried and trusted dress. Actually had an hour’s notice that we were headed somewhere different and, consequently, I was wearing a dress that suited me perfectly. I have one more daughter left – gotta get it right!!

OMG, what a dress! Your dress is really wonderful, I love this design with the spectacular frills! And of course I love the lovely print! And I love the delicacy of the entire outfit, with the stilettos, the fantastic and elegant jacket and the clutch that is cute. Laurie you look really spectacular, beautiful and elegant!
